The City of Ottawa is looking to acquire a former CN railway corridor in hopes of protecting the space and developing a year-round recreational trail for local residents.
The Beachburg Subdivision corridor is approximately 35.2 kilometres long, passing through several areas in Ottawa including the western Greenbelt, Kanata North and farmland near the Ottawa River.
With seven bridges, 52 culverts and plenty of walkable pathways, turning the old transport track into usable recreation space is a great way to revitalize the underused property, wrote Kanata North city councillor Jenna Sudds in a recent letter to the community.
“I have been actively advocating for the city to purchase this corridor since I was elected in 2018,” Sudds said. “In my mind, it is important to take advantage of great opportunities such as this one, for providing pathways for recreation in addition to a connection to other parts of the city.”
If the plans come to fruition, it would further enhance Kanata North’s already extensive network of trails and recreational opportunities enjoyed by residents and tech park workers alike.
A more detailed plan will be presented to council in fall 2021 once a full examination of the area is completed.
“This is a smart investment for our city, for now, and many years to come,” Sudds added.
