This month, we will feature a speaker from our Ottawa technology community who now occupies an important position in the field of national security.
Michael Doucet is the Executive Director of Canada’s ‘Security Intelligence Review Committee’ (SIRC), an agency which carries out continuous independent review of the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) and which reports to Canada’s Parliament. Further information about ‘SIRC’ can be found at http://www.sirc-csars.gc.ca/abtprp/index-eng.html
Mr. Doucet will discuss Intelligence versus Privacy: a false dichotomy?
How can our government manage both the requirement for a strong Canadian national security foundation and the privacy rights of its citizens?
Are we forced to chose between privacy and freedom?
Mr. Doucet will focus on the way in which SIRC fulfills its mandate and endeavors to ensure the delicate balance between the governments need for intelligence and the need to protect the privacy of Canadians.
Mr. Doucet joined SIRC in 2012 from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police where he held the positions of Chief Information Officer (CIO) and Chief Technology Officer. Prior to joining the RCMP in April 2010, Mr. Doucet occupied the position of CIO/ Director General of the Information Management Services Branch at Correctional Service Canada for over two years. Mr. Doucet has also worked with the Communications Security Establishment of Canada (CSEC) as the CSEC’s Senior Liaison Officer to the National Security Agency as well as working with the Canadian Food Inspection Agency. Mr. Doucet began his federal career with CSEC in 1988.
