Innovation Morning: Decontamination by Design

June 11 @ 8:30 am - 10:30 am

Free

As part of Ottawa Innovation Week, CU@Kanata invites industry professionals, community members, students, and researchers from across the region to a focused morning of expert talks and networking exploring the topic of nature-based and microbial innovations for urban pollution remediation. Discover the latest advances in microplastics removal from stormwater and the transformative potential of microbial communities in environmental remediation. Featuring lightning talks by Dr. Jennifer Drake (Civil & Environmental Engineering) and Dr. Allyson Brady (Biology), this event offers a unique opportunity to engage with cutting-edge research and forge new collaborations at the intersection of engineering, biology, and sustainability.

The talks will be followed by an interactive Q&A session and dedicated networking time, providing space for collaboration and discussion among innovators, academics, and community stakeholders.

Light refreshments will be provided. This event is open to all—come be part of Ottawa Innovation Week and join the conversation!

Guest Speakers

Dr. Allyson Brady – Assistant Professor in the Department of Biology, PhD in Earth Sciences from McMaster University. Dr. Brady’s research explores the powerful role microbes play in restoring and protecting our planet. Dr. Brady focuses on microbial ecology in extreme environments, using innovative techniques like organic biomarker analysis and isotopic tracing to better understand how microbial life contributes to environmental remediation.
Her work has direct applications in developing more sustainable, eco-conscious practices—particularly for organizations looking to minimize their environmental impact through science-based solutions.
If your organization is exploring ways to advance its environmental sustainability goals through research and collaboration, this is a valuable opportunity to hear from Dr. Brady, connect with her directly, and explore potential partnerships.

Dr. Jennifer Drake – Canada Research Chair (Tier II) in Stormwater and Low Impact Development, Associate Professor, Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering. Dr. Drake specializes in nature-based solutions for urban flooding and stormwater pollution, with current research focusing on the fate of microplastics and the effectiveness of bioretention gardens as removal strategies. Her work leverages advanced green infrastructure—such as bioretention gardens, permeable pavements, and green roofs—to filter pollutants, reduce flooding risks, and enhance the resilience of our cities. Dr. Drake’s research bridges engineering, sustainability, and real-world policy, providing actionable strategies for municipalities and organizations committed to cleaner, healthier urban environments.
If your organization is seeking innovative, evidence-based approaches to stormwater management or wants to collaborate on implementing sustainable infrastructure, this is an excellent opportunity to engage with Dr. Drake.

Together, Dr. Brady and Dr. Drake offer complementary perspectives on environmental remediation—from the power of microbial communities to the impact of engineered green infrastructure. Join us to connect with these leading researchers and discover new pathways for advancing your sustainability goals.
