The Kanata North Business Area is a significant economic engine for the City of Ottawa in technology jobs, research and development, contributing $7.8 billion to Canada’s GDP in 2015 and paying more than $120 million in taxes to the City. As the Country’s largest Research and Technology Park, with an average productivity 3 times higher than the Canadian average, we are continuing to experience growth in employment.
The demand for talent in our City has never been higher. Accessibility to public transportation is critical to attracting and retaining a talented workforce, and is an important factor in attracting new businesses to the area and in retaining those currently located in Ottawa. We have been approached many times from local businesses who have said that they had difficulty in hiring tech workers because they couldn’t get there due to a lack of transit. Long term action is needed soon to address these issues.
With the support of many from the Business Community, we respectfully submitted the attached letter on April 13th to the Mayor asking the City to review and reconsider it’s plans for LRT to Kanata.
